Alhama de Granada

Alhama is the perfect place for a relaxing holiday. The town is completely self-contained, and yet compact enough that you can walk from one side to the other in less than twenty minutes. You'll find it easy to spend your time here without using a car unless you want to go exploring.

The nearest bars and restaurants are in Plaza de la Constitución (left), about 2-3 minutes' walk from the house in Calle Las Parras. Our own house is in Calle Arquillos, a street about twenty metres above the Plaza, so we are easy to get hold of if you need us for anything.

There are a bakery and a greengrocer's on the Plaza, with other shops slightly further on. There's even a bread delivery van that visits Calle Las Parras most days. There are several small supermarkets dotted around Alhama, two of them within a couple of minutes' walk of the house on Calle Las Parras.

Most of the bars serve tapas, and many do full meals. For anyone in search of something special there is La Seguiriya restaurant, close to the Plaza and with the best view of the gorge that we've seen. A different kind of treat is available, on cold winter evenings, in Bar Ochoa just off the Plaza where they'll bring a brazier of hot coals to place under your table to warm your feet. Bar La Boega, next door, also warrants a mention for delicious tapas. Right, La Encarnación.

The hot springs for which the town is named are about three kilometres from town - walkable if you've got the energy, otherwise a short drive. Well worth it, either way. The water is clear and hot, and flows through a series of rock pools, each a little cooler than the last, until it merges with the Rio Alhama.

There is a music festival in Alhama each year during July and August, now in its 42nd year. There are also fiestas in February, June and September. Left, the square in front of La Encarnación.

Like most of southern Spain, Alhama is very hot in the summer, with daytime temperatures reaching the high 30s. Spring and autumn are more like hot English summers - perfect for sunbathing, or walking and cycling holidays. As Alhama is up in the mountains - 1000m above sea level - the winters are warm during the day, but cold at night. Bring jumpers! Right, La Casa de la Inquisición.
