Alhama de Granada is an ancient spa town in the mountains of Andalucía, built along the edge of a gorge through which flows the River Alhama. It is a pretty, traditional town and its old quarter, the barrio árabe, dates from Moorish times. A newer section was built following a severe earthquake in the late nineteenth century. The Rough Guide to Andalucía describes it as "one of the unsung gems of Granada province". About 6,000 people live in Alhama and it is self-sufficient in terms of shops, bars, restaurants and other services. Above, La Encarnación from our rear balcony.
